Year 6 interview Children's Author Ali Sparkes

Years 5 and 6 were thrilled to welcome the award-winning author, Ali Sparkes, to Chandlings this term. After hypnotizing the children with her special whirly-whirly gadget, Ali delivered an entertaining talk about her journey to becoming a super-successful author, including her struggles to learn to read and write at school, and the many rejections she experienced along the way. Ali showed the children her very first series of Blytonesque adventure books, handwritten and illustrated by herself at the age of 15 and encouraged all would-be writers to start writing and never give up.

Our Year 6 children, who have been reading Car-Jacked by Ali Sparkes in their English lessons this term, were delighted to have an opportunity to interview the author in person. Ali kindly answered dozens of the questions the children had thoughtfully prepared prior to her talk, revealing her favourite words, her favourite confectionery, and some of the books she enjoyed reading as a child, including The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken, and Jennie by Paul Gallicoe. The children also heard inside information about the next Ali Sparkes novel, due to be published in 2023.
