Pre-Prep (5-7 years) - Chandlings Independent Prep School - Oxford

Our Pre-Prep programme offers a seamless, nurturing journey from our youngest learners in Nursery through to Year 2.

Under the expert guidance of Maria McAloon, our EYFS specialist, we ensure each child receives personalised care and attention throughout these formative years. Our dedicated staff, many of whom have been with us for years, create a warm, supportive environment where children can thrive.

Year 1 (Age 5-6): Growing Independence

As children enter Year 1, we nurture their growing independence and introduce more subject-specific learning. This is a time of fun and discovery, with separate subjects like Science and Engineering joining the curriculum.

Learning is based on engaging topics that change each term, such as Dinosaurs, Space, and The Wonderful World of Chocolate. We make connections across all subjects to these themes, creating a rich, interconnected learning experience. To reinforce classroom learning, we organise exciting trips, such as visits to the Oxford Natural History Museum and the Bucks Museum to learn about Roald Dahl.

Year 2 (Age 6-7): Confidence & Creativity

In Year 2, we continue to build on the thematic learning approach, further developing subject-specific skills. Children at this stage show increasing confidence and creativity, which we encourage through independent project work and creative expression. The expertise of our specialist teaching staff plays a crucial role in inspiring children and nurturing their individual strengths.

Our Approach

Throughout the Pre-Prep years, we maintain small class sizes, with a teacher and teaching assistant in each classroom. This ensures that every child receives the attention and support they need to flourish. Our nurturing environment, where staff genuinely care about each child, provides consistent pastoral care alongside academic support.

Striking a careful balance between structured learning and free exploration.

Regular opportunities for outdoor learning in our extensive grounds are a key feature of our programme, allowing children to connect with nature and learn through hands-on experiences.

We understand that these early years are not just about preparing for the next stage of education, they’re about embracing the magic of childhood, fostering a love of learning, and building the confidence to explore, question, and grow. Our approach lays the foundation for lifelong learning, all while ensuring that each child’s unique personality and interests are celebrated and nurtured. We’re not just educating young minds; we’re nurturing the whole child, helping them develop into confident, curious, and compassionate individuals.
